The bidding process for the second tour was a bit arduous, at least relative to the first time I had to bid. As it turns out, there are a lot of moving parts in State Dept.: when I have to depart my current assignment, when the other Embassy wants me to arrive, what training do I need in between, etc.
I had approximately two weeks to decide which 20 positions I wanted to include in my bid list! Task: to include as many jobs in my career track as possible, focus in countries where I do not have to learn a language (because I had language training for my last assignment), and talk to my “career advisor” about my priorities. I was day dreaming for a couple of days – watching YouTube videos of different countries in Latin America and Europe, talking to people who have worked there, and asking myself why would I like to work there.
At the end, Honduras was the only perfect match in terms of timing, language skills, and having a job in my specialty – public diplomacy! When I submitted my list, I already knew I would most likely get Honduras, even if I did not rank it high. And guess what? I got Honduras.
I will be doing my first tour as a public diplomacy officer, working on the media and press portfolio. I’m excited to learn something new and finally work in my specialty! I’m also thrilled to be closer to family in Guatemala!
